Choosing your Wedding Photographer
Helpful advice from Bob McEvoy MA, LRPS, a trained and experienced professional Photographer…
“Choosing the person who will make a photographic record of your wedding is one of the most important decisions you will make when planning your big day.”
Here’s why:-
1. In just a few years time your album will evoke memories of the day, such as nothing else can. It will be a family heirloom for generations to come.
2. You need a photographer whose personality will compliment the happiness of the day. A photographer with a surly or abusive attitude towards your guests will ruin your day.
3. Your photographer can be a help or a hindrance! He/she needs to be able to be unobtrusive at some times during the day, helpful and interactive at others.
4. Your photographer will be with you all day! Most other wedding suppliers will do their best to make sure that your big day is really special. Professional suppliers who take a pride in their work will deliver their services courteously and on time. But your contact with them on the day itself may be only for a very short time. Your photographer may be with you from early morning to late night! Choose someone who will work with you, and who you think won’t just be an irritant after a few hours.!
So, for these reasons, be careful when booking. While there is no need to go over the top, don’t base your choice on the cheapest photographer available either. Like with so many areas of life, you only get what you pay for.
Here are a few simple questions to ask your photographer…
• What photographic training have you done, and what are your qualifications? (Remember that membership of an organisation does not imply a qualification. Some photographic organisations will allow anyone to be a member without any formal training or qualifications)
• Are you a member of a professional body? If so which one, and at what level?
• Are you insured? Be especially careful here – A wedding photographer needs two types of insurance, - Third Party Risk and Professional Indemnity. Without BOTH of these insurances, avoid them!
• What length of experience do you have in wedding photography?
• What is your style of photography? Make sure that the photographer works in a style that matches your expectations.
• Does your package cover the day from the Bride’s home to the first dance, or are these extra?
• Will you hold the price that you are quoting? Or will there be an extra charge for subsequent years?
• Is there a mileage charge, or any extras not mentioned in your literature?
No genuine photographer will be afraid to answer these questions honestly.
If in any doubt, ASK BOB.
